It's fantastic design, which allows the gate to open in either direction. It's also a lovely piece of engineering. and quite different to the usual gate catches. But looking at it it's really difficult to see how it operates, not made any easier by the fact that it was fitted a little low. It turns out it's easy to get fingers caught too.
